Many of us, myself included, fall victim to our fight or flight nervous system. There is an excessive response to a perceived social, emotional or even intellectual threat. Much of the time, within these moments, there is no one to physically fight or run from. It is you and I who stand there feeling the effects of this overwhelming rush. This autonomic response is incredibly powerful due to its grounding in millions of years of evolution. We must acknowledge and feel it fully for this response to lose its power over us. We must tame this deeply rooted inner animal experience by finding healthy ways to express it and by ultimately choosing peace, over and over again. As the title to Thich Nhat Hanh’s book states, “Peace Is Every Step”. This is an incredibly powerful path to peace and it begins within each of us in every moment of our lives.
