I received three great comments on my last post (no. 73) regarding myths and drugs. Here is my attempt to respond to all three:
I agree that pharmaceuticals are important to many people, myself included. I guess I was trying to say that so much of medicine concentrates on physiology and control over it and there is still a place for myth and/or religion in current society. Religion and/or myths provide humanity with something that drugs alone can’t… meaning or purpose. They give the believer a way to make sense of their world. Some kind of framework to view life from.
I agree, there are many types of healing and ways of going about it. I just think that too much reliance on drugs is dangerous but when used appropriately they are a powerful way to help heal people.
I am distressed at the volume of people who rely on medication and not the wonderful mind with which to fully live and function. In my opinion the mind is one if not THE greatest gift we have and it is probably used less than any other organ.
I agree that the mind is truly the greatest gift. Medication is definitely overused/abused. However, when used appropriately in combination with other modes of healing, it does help. The power of the mind is infinite!!
I have always been grateful for medications taken in moderation, however, that has always been my recommendation only after alternatives have been applied. I believe that should be the last line of treatment since other avenues can and should be explored. Exercise, nutrition, spirituality, preferred activities for entertainment can all be useful tools to combat depression and other conditions.
Agreed. Well said. Thanks for the clarification.
