No matter how much contemplation is done regarding who we are, who we’ve been and who we long to become, ultimately we must act amongst others in the world of shared space and time. This is an effective way to come to know ourselves. By acting in the world amongst others we are instructed and educated in this very important subject.
While it may be tempting to think of self understanding as static and constant, we are truly in a continual process of becoming. Because of this we are required to maintain a balance of ongoing contemplation and action, the end result of which is an ever evolving, ever changing self knowledge.
Agree. Understanding the Self is a life-long learning crusade, tempered by the environment, chemistry and luck. Sharing some of that learning with others is altruistic. Some learning is intimate and private. If and when that awareness becomes uncomfortably negative, it’s time to reach out and surround oneself with good, like-minded folks who help us carry our temporary pain.
And it is temporary pain. We’ve learned that and must believe it. The colorful horizon, a child’s smile, a humorist’s rant, lucious food at a table with friends or family. That’s the equation for rehabilitation. That’s what reduces cynicism and promotes hope.
Like minded folks is key. Makes me think of the music video for the song “No Rain” by Blind Melon. Great message in that video. I think of it often when I feel out of place and alone in my struggles. Check it out on YouTube. Thanks for the thoughtful comment!
